He glanced at the door to make sure it was closed. The ten other congresspersons in the room looked too, as he went on, \u201cIt\u2019s so miraculous I think that God must have ordained it! We have learned\u2026\u201d He gasped, the others tittered, and nodded encouragingly. \u201c\u2026that you can lie, and lie big, and you can stay with the lie, and you can ignore whatever people say about the lie, and\u2026it still\u2026works!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYES!\u201d the others said, high-fiving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s obvious to me that God wants us to lie!<\/em> I mean, when Trump started in on that stuff I thought, well, that\u2019s the end of him. But then the internet, uh, support <\/em>came. From\u2026you know. And Fox fell in line, and Carlson and Hannity and\u2026thousands of websites! And the Oath Keepers came along and\u2026they all said, \u2018YES!<\/em>\u2019 \u2026And people just opened their mouths and they took it in and they swallowed it!<\/em> It\u2019s so\u2026incredibly\u2026astounding! <\/em>We can now say ANYTHING we want! And if we repeat it enough\u2026it\u2019s real! We can say the election was fake!\u201d He glanced at the door once more to make sure it was, yes, still closed. \u201cAnd we can know it wasn\u2019t \u2014 and it does\u2026not\u2026matter!<\/em> If enough people just accept and repeat it, it\u2019s like\u2026like it becomes real! We can make the lie alter its very substance and\u2026it becomes the truth! It\u2019s no longer a lie! I mean \u2014 in people\u2019s minds!<\/em> If people believe it\u2019s true \u2014 then isn\u2019t that<\/em> a reality?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDidn\u2019t George W. Bush float something like that?\u201d said another Republican, scratching his head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh sure, but\u2026he didn\u2019t persevere! And he didn\u2019t have Trump to make thousands of people chant the lie in a rally!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd Qanon! That too \u2014 it\u2019s just so amazing!\u201d said the other Republican. \u201cThey\u2019re on our side and they have the power to make people believe anything, the most incredible\u2026\u201d He glanced at the door, lowering his voice. \u201c\u2026bullshit!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everyone laughed and high-fived again .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2026and millions of people still believe them! Even crazy numbers of Japanese people!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTrue! If it\u2019s said in enough websites that spread \u2018alternate news\u2019 \u2014 then people believe it! \u2018The vaccine is a mind control conspiracy!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everyone roared in laughter at that. They\u2019d all made sure to quietly get a Covid vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m just saying,\u201d the politician went on. \u201cIt\u2019s a miracle! God has given us the gift of changing reality!<\/em> If we lie over and over again and kinda keep changing up the excuses we can take over the country, and run it the way we want, and no one will care!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got to get rid of Liz Cheney,\u201d someone put in grumblingly. \u201cShe\u2019ll spoil everything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh, we\u2019re on that. But just think \u2014 all this time<\/em> we thought that obvious lies were toxic. That we couldn\u2019t get away with them. But it\u2019s just about\u2026doing it together! It\u2019s a chorus of lies! That changes everything! If only we\u2019d known!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
