Gaia’s Prophecy

The human crowd is chattering
\nUnhearing men trade flattering;
\nThose ever speaking cannot hear
\nThe voice of the Unseen One near<\/p>\n
But quiet ones hear the unheard
\nEcholocation bears their words:
\nSpirits of trees, the spirits of mammals;
\nAnimis Mundi of all animals<\/p>\n
Spirits of caverns, spirits of sea:
\nTheir moaning cries call out to me–
\nThey mourn the loss of mermaid daughters;
\nOf fish and whales, dolphins and otters<\/p>\n
In forest is heard the lamentation
\nFor creatures lost in mass extinction;
\nAnd birds are dying as insects vanish,
\nSeeds are gone or cease to nourish<\/p>\n
At last is come sweet Gaia’s answer
\nShe flicks a finger at the cancer:
\n“The humans corrupt with greed and hurry
\n“Have turned the seas to plastic slurry<\/p>\n
“They choke Poseidon, and elementals,
\n“Burn up nature’s fundamentals;
\n“More than locusts, more than mold
\n“They gulp and blight all they behold<\/p>\n
“But harken to this prophesy:
\n“Their works will fall to entropy;
\n“Humanity will consume itself:
\n“A new extinction on the shelf;<\/p>\n
“My kaleidoscope will whirl in glory
\n“And up will rise a newborn story:
\n“Nature returns to sanity\u2014
\nAnd I won’t bring back humanity.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
